Broken promises continue
It has been hard settling down to write my column, not just because I am tired following Labour Party Conference, nor because it’s a gorgeous day outside, but because, yesterday, I collected a new addition to my family. Her name is Cara. She is a beautiful, nine-week-old, Yorkshire Terrier, currently chewing at my laptop, to encourage me to abandon work and just play. Oh! The temptation! Cara is a welcome milestone in my worst year ever. She’s not the only milestone of recent days, though. Ed Milliband celebrated his first year as Labour Party Leader and the Tories go to their conference after a full year in Government. I guess Dodgy Dave will act triumphant, celebrating Lybia. That’s easy: absolutely nothing. This Tory government just makes things worse. The economy has stagnated. Inflation is expected to rise above 5%. Unemployment is up. Fuel bills have risen by a staggering 14%: food bills by 6%. Tax credits and help with childcare bills have been cut. People worry about losing their jobs and paying bills. It’s even worse, though. This Government’s actions lack fundamental morality. Bankers receive tax cuts, while VAT increases leave hard-pressed families struggling. The wealthiest see their wealth grow, whilst the coalition considers tax cuts for everyone earning over £3,000 per week. How can that be right? Cameron should use the Tory conference to change tack. He should try living up to his rhetoric about us all being in this together. Sadly, even if he did promise a new deal, one thing we do know, just like hospital closures, police numbers and the economy, any promise Dodgy Dave makes will simply be broken.
