Lyn Brown MP is delighted to congratulate all Newham students, parents and teaching staff on achieving another significant rise in their GCSE results.
64% of students at Newham schools achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSE passes in 2009, a 5% increase on 2008 and a massive 30% increase since 1998.
Stratford School in Newham was singled out as one of the top 100 schools in the country achieving the most sustained improvements. The school has seen a 20% increase in the number of students achieving 5 or more A*-C GCSE passes in just 4 years.
Lyn Brown MP said,
“Today’s results are a testament to the hard work of teachers, pupils and parents in Newham. Since 1997, schools in our borough have been transformed by these efforts and extra investment from the Government.
This continued investment means that Newham schools can now boast of smaller class sizes, more teachers and teaching assistants and better buildings and facilities. Since 1997, the Government has doubled the investment in every child’s education. This investment is essential to help all our young people to achieve their full potential.
The Tory claim that there has been no improvement in the education system insults the hard work of these teachers, pupils and parents. It is obvious to everyone that our young people are raising their aspirations and achieving more than ever.
Labour has pledged to increase schools funding in real terms over the next three years and have committed to rebuilding and refurbishing every secondary school in the country. The Tories will cut local school spending should they win the election. This would turn back the clock on all the progress that has been made and would be a disaster for Newham schools.”
