Lyn Brown MP attacks Government plans to sell off Royal Mail | |
Lyn Brown MP has hit out at the Coalition Government’s plans to privatise the Royal Mail. The plans will jeopardise the future of Post Offices across the Borough as there will no longer be a guarantee of Royal Mail business. Royal Mail provides up to a third of income for Post Offices and the loss of this business will be devastating. Furthermore, the Government will not guarantee the universal service obligation which ensures you pay one price to send a stamped letter anywhere in Britain. Customers will be forced to pay more money for a greatly limited service. Lyn Brown MP said: “The Coalition is determined to sell Royal Mail without legislating for any long term commitment to post offices or acknowledging the consequences of a loss of service to ordinary people.” “Government plans could mean that a privatised Royal Mail will choose supermarkets or high street chains for its counter services. Post Offices will be forced to close. A service as important as the Post Office should be accessible to all and not be confined to town centres only.” “I will be fighting this move and voting against it in Parliament. I don’t want the Coalition to put at risk our much loved national institution and leave people in Newham without a decent postal service.”
