Lyn Brown MP is backing Labour’s campaign for jobs and growth to boost Britain’s economy.

Growth in the UK has completely stalled, and job figures released this week show the highest unemployment level for 17 years, with the most women out of work since 1988. The number of young people out of work has hit one million for the first time ever.  133,800 young people have now been out of work for more than six months, which is up a staggering 83% since January.

With unemployment rising, inflation high and the economy flatlining, the Government is set to borrow £46bn more than was planned in this Parliament.

Lyn Brown said: ‘This is a really worrying time for families in West Ham who are struggling with higher food prices and gas bills and worried about their jobs and their children’s futures.’

‘This Government has trebled tuition fees, abolished EMA and cut childcare provision; it is making it even harder for people to gain training and get into work.’

‘Labour’s tax on bankers bonuses could create up to 11,500 jobs for young people in London’

‘I’m backing Labour’s plan for jobs and growth and I will be collecting signatures in Stratford over the next weeks to show support for Labour’s plan. These are emergency measures to help boost the economy’.

Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party, said: ‘These are dangerous times for Britain's economy and worrying times for millions of families.’

‘Week-by-week, day-by-day, with every downgrade in growth with every new set of unemployment figures, we can see the government’s plan is failing.’

‘That is an economic emergency.’

‘Only a government which is badly out of touch with what is happening in Britain’s factories, its high streets and its homes, would fail to realize that. Today it is clear - it is hurting but it has not worked.’

‘We are calling for an emergency Budget now. A clear five-point plan to create jobs, help struggling families and support small businesses.’

Ed Balls MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, added: ‘The government can call their new plan whatever they like: Plan A plus , Plan B. It doesn’t matter what it’s called.’

‘Britain just needs a plan that works.’
