During this record-breaking spell of cold weather many Newham residents, particularly the vulnerable and the elderly, will be worrying about the cost of staying warm. But there is plenty of help available for anyone concerned about the cost of their heating.
The Home Heat Helpline can advise anyone struggling with fuel bills on how they can manage their payments and stay warm this winter – they can be called for FREE on 0800 33 66 99 or visit www.homeheathelpline.org.uk . They can advise on the benefits available, reduced tariffs from all energy suppliers and eligibility for free insulation. You can also call on behalf of a relative, friend or neighbour that you are worried about.
If you are a British Gas customer, you can contact them for free on 0800 072 7100 or at http://www.britishgas.co.uk/. They will offer you advice on the best tariff for your needs and income as well as how to insulate your house and protect your boiler in the freezing temperatures.
If you are struggling with your payments, it is essential that you contact the Home Heat Helpline or your energy supplier as soon as possible. They may be able to offer extended payment terms or transfer you to a low cost tariff. Customers over 70 or on income-related benefits may be entitled to extra help, including free insulation.
Lyn Brown MP says,
“No one should have to spend the winter without affordable heat for their home. There is help available, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable, and it’s vital that everyone knows how to access this.
The Home Heat Helpline is an excellent initiative, supported by the major energy suppliers and I would urge anyone who is worried about their energy bills to contact them as soon as possible as they can help. I am also pleased to see that British Gas is providing a wide range of assistance for their customers.
I would urge anyone over 60 to check whether they are eligible for the Winter Fuel Allowance by calling 0845 915 1515 at local rates. Cold Weather Payments for those on low incomes may have been triggered in the last month as well, check www.direct.gov.uk for more details.
We must all take the time to help the vulnerable in our community as well. Popping round to check on an elderly neighbour or relative is more important than ever in this cold weather.
If you need any assistance accessing the help available, please contact my office on 020 219 6999.”
