Lyn Brown MP has been debating the election and politics in West Ham with some of our politicians of the future during a visit to St Bonaventure’s in Forest Gate.
She took questions from an A-Level Politics class on a wide range of subjects including her role as a Whip, Labour’s New Deal for young people and why young people should vote Labour.
The students heard Lyn explain how her politics are shaped by the views, needs and experiences of the local community. As MP for West Ham, Lyn’s priorities are tackling poverty, getting more affordable housing and making sure local people get the help they need.
Many of the pupils will be first-time voters at the election and they listened closely to what Lyn had to say and were lively in debate.
Lyn Brown MP said,
“I always find meeting with young people inspiring and my morning at St Bonaventure’s was no exception. The students are very articulate and had prepared some tough questions – I suspect there might be a future Jeremy Paxman in the making! I really enjoyed my morning debating and engaging with them all.
It was great to see so many students studying A-Level Politics – despite what many people think, our young people are interested in politics, it’s up to us to engage with them.
St Bon’s is clearly an outstanding local school run by excellent staff who really care about their students. The school has good exam results, and also a good feeling of community, which encourages students to work together to achieve their full potential. I have no doubt that all the young people I had the privilege to meet will go on to achieve great things – I wish them all every success for the future.” |
