In less than six months we face a clear choice in the most important general election for a generation.  Do we want a society and economy that work for ordinary people, or a country that’s increasingly unequal, unjust and unfair?

Driving back from Westminster, I witness the crowds flocking to see the unique and awe inspiring ceramic poppy field at the Tower of London.  It is a red carpet of 888,246 poppies, one for each British and Colonial life lost in the First World War.

It was great at the Labour Party conference last week, feeling the real passion as Ed Miliband spoke about our NHS.  The sheer strength of his commitment roused several standing ovations.  Much needs to be done to rescue vital services, crumbling in the face of the Coalition’s careless, maybe calculated, neglect.

This Parliamentary session seemed likely to be uneventful.  Not so.

Last Friday, I voted for a Bill to protect victims of the awful Bedroom Tax.  Very unusually, we won!!  The LibDems, repentant sinners on this issue, joined us to defeat the Tories.  Don’t cheer yet.  The Government will do absolutely everything they can to scupper this Bill.

Summer, so far, is something of a washout for me.  I really hurt my left knee while exercising and can barely walk.  Changing gears in the car is painfully hard.  So it’s as good a time as any for my gearbox to break and need replacing.

Throughout this year, we’ll hear much about the “Great War:” the first World War 1914-1918.  Like many Newham people, my family fought in it.  My great grandfather and his brothers, all from Canning Town, went, fought and survived.  Many friends and neighbours weren’t so lucky.

Regular readers know how often I complain this Government have run out of steam.  They have no sense of urgency:  no dynamism.  They passed self-serving legislation for five-year Parliaments; otherwise, there’d have been a General Election before now.

As I write, we’re waiting for the results of Newham’s European, Councillor and Mayoral elections.  Through elections such as these, many people channel their desire to serve our communities and deliver improvements to our area.  I pay tribute to their public service.

Now the sun has started to shine, it’s easy to feel a little more optimistic.  Spring is a wonderful time.

Viewers of my Facebook page will know that my garden is beginning to show a touch of colour after a dreary winter, in which people across the country, though not in Newham, thankfully, have seen their lives turned upside down by storms and floods.  My thoughts are with them, as they struggle to rebuild their homes and their lives.

Last week’s Budget showed just who this Government is out to cultivate and to reward:  the wealthy fortunate enough to have savings, people able to put aside £15,000 a year for a rainy day, those who got the millionaires’ tax cut last April, and big energy businesses already profiteering at your expense.

I love the Recorder’s new format and I am delighted it has returned to its exclusive focus on Newham.  Congratulations to Archant Newspaper Group and Editor Michael Adkins.

While assessing the new look, I reflected that the Recorder has been a constant feature throughout my life.
