Use of military during 2012 Olympics

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond revealed on Thursday the extent and size of military involvement during the Olympic Games. The MOD will provide up to 13,500 military personnel to offer support to the police and other civil and Olympic authorities.

Lyn Brown MP said: "I am pleased that the Government has finally provided greater detail regarding the number of military personnel that will be in place during the Olympics."

"The safety of residents, athletes and visitors is my number one concern, and it is in the interest of everyone who wants to ensure a successful Games that appropriate levels of security are provided."

"I want to make sure that residents feel comfortable with the vastly increased military presence on our streets, and I am seeking a meeting with the Minister to discuss the deployment of military personnel."
