Another week, another flood of revelations about the “partygate” scandal.

I’ve received many emails from constituents expressing anger and disbelief at the reported parties in Downing St. People are shocked to learn of parties during the national lockdown, breaking the Government’s own rules, whilst people were dying of Coronavirus.

There’s a burning anger at the utter lack of respect for the rules from those at the top of Government. Insincere ‘apologies’ underline their contempt.

“Partygate” makes it sound trivial. It is not.

We have the right to expect honesty from our politicians, especially the prime minister.

Each week, Mr Johnson says something in Parliament which has to be “fact-checked.” It erodes trust in politics.

Politicians are public servants. They have a duty to serve the interests of the British people. Previous prime ministers understood that. Theresa May understood it. Mr Johnson doesn’t. This is damaging the country, at home and abroad.

Remember. This Prime Minister sold us Brexit as the best deal ever. It’s anything but.

He insisted there’d be no customs border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain saying:

“There will not be checks. I speak as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and a passionate unionist. There will not be checks on goods going from Northern Ireland to Great Britain. Because we’re the Government of the United Kingdom and we’ll not institute or implement or enact such checks.”

He promptly broke that promise by passing into law the Northern Ireland protocol, undermining the Good Friday agreement. And for anyone asking, Brexit is certainly not done.

The White House and Kremlin both mock Mr Johnson’s behaviour. His antics make Britain a laughing stock. How can we hope to exert influence and impact positively the Russia-Ukraine crisis? Or negotiate the return of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe? Or apply pressure to bring home British children trapped in Afghanistan? His behaviour robs us of the diplomatic power to achieve anything.

It’s unbelievable that this prime minister won’t do the right thing by this country and resign.

Party politics aside, we need and deserve a prime minister we can trust.

Boris Johnson has to go.
